Fall is our favorite time of year here at the Vinton County Visitors’ Center. Our landscape is absolutely beautiful as the leaves begin to change colors and drift to the ground. Fall brings days filled with lovely scenery, countless ways to get outdoors and discovery around every bend in the road. Evenings are filled with campfires, starlit skies and ghost stories!
My favorite thing to do in fall is to grab my camera, a bottle of water and my hiking shoes. There are so many places here to hike and to capture a beautiful shot. Lake Hope has an extensive set of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind throughout the park and that provide opportunities for people of all skill levels. Lake Alma also has some hiking trails as well as a nice paved bike path that provides safe cycling for all ages and a nice outdoor experience for anyone seeking handicap accessibility. Another great place to check out is the Moonville Tunnel. This is an abandoned railroad tunnel that legend tells us is haunted by one – or perhaps several – ghosts! We’ll post more on Moonville soon.
Something else we love in Vinton County is our fall events! Lake Hope’s ROAR Day celebrates Appalachian traditions, Lake Alma’s fall campout celebrates Halloween and there are plenty of hikes, wagon rides, and other ways to get outside.
We recommend viewing Vinton County from different angles. Take a hike, take a guided horseback ride and tour the county by plane to see different aspects of this beautiful place. You won’t be disappointed.
