For over 30 years, the Wild Turkey Festival has been one of Vinton County’s most popular events, attracting visitors from across the state. The festival opens on the first Thursday evening in May and runs through the following Sunday. Free admission for people of all ages makes the festival an excellent family-friendly vacation stop.
As at any hometown festival, classic carnival rides and games are a staple. Walking down the fairway, festival goers will pass booths containing local crafts, raffles, and food vendors serving up tasty regional specialties. Naturalists from the surrounding state parks provide educational programs on local wildlife.
Live music performers take the stage every night of the festival. Past entertainers have included Neil McCoy, Confederate Railroad, Chris Higbee, and well-known tribute bands. Pre-show meet-and-greets are held at the Vinton County Visitor Center, where visitors can pick up some nifty souvenirs. The 2020 entertainment lineup is:
Thursday, May 7
Karaoke Contest Finals
Friday, May 8
Blues Cowboys
Kenny Valentine Band
The Band Keesey
Saturday, May 9
Donna Mogavero
Angela Perley
A Grand Parade is held each year on Saturday, featuring dozens of entrants who ride, drive, and march to the awe of crowding spectators. Royal courts from across the state sit proudly atop glamorous floats, led by the parade’s hand-selected Grand Marshall. Local organizations hand out candy and flyers, much to the enjoyment of children lining the streets.
Sunday features a car show, baby contest, prize drawings, turkey drop, and live gospel music.
